When I think of the Atonement, I often think of it in terms
of times of need such as when I have made a mistake and need forgiveness. While
it is the path back from sin and sorrow, the Atonement also helps us become
better and stronger people each and every day. As mortal human beings, we are
simply not capable of making a sacrifice on the level of what the Savior did
for us, but we can be sure to remember it at all times and we not take it for
granted. We have been provided with a way to cleanse ourselves from sin and be
worthy to return to our Heavenly Father, and that is a blessing so immense that
there are times that I can’t even begin to grasp what all it actually entails.
"There is no greater expression of love than the heroic
Atonement performed by the Son of God. Were it not for the plan of our Heavenly
Father, established before the world began, in a very real sense, all
mankind—past, present, and future—would have been left without the hope of
eternal progression. As a result of Adam’s transgression, mortals were
separated from God (see Rom. 6:23) and would be forever unless a way was found
to break the bands of death. This would not be easy, for it required the
vicarious sacrifice of one who was sinless and who could therefore take upon
Himself the sins of all mankind."
Elder M. Russell Ballard, “The Atonement and Value of OneSoul”, April 2004 General Conference
"It is a fundamental truth that through the Atonement of
Jesus Christ we can be cleansed. We can become virtuous and pure. However,
sometimes our poor choices leave us with long-term consequences. One of the
vital steps to complete repentance is to bear the short- and long-term
consequences of our past sins."
Elder Richard G. Scott, “Personal Strength through theAtonement of Jesus Christ”, October 2013 General Conference
"No matter what our transgressions have been, no matter how
much our actions may have hurt others, that guilt can all be wiped out. To me,
perhaps the most beautiful phrase in all scripture is when the Lord said,
“Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the
Lord, remember them no more."
Elder Boyd K. Packer, “The Atonement”, October 2012 General Conference
"Not only does the Atonement of Jesus Christ overcome the
effects of the Fall of Adam and make possible the remission of our individual
sins and transgressions, but His Atonement also enables us to do good and
become better in ways that stretch far beyond our mortal capacities. Most of us
know that when we do things wrong and need help to overcome the effects of sin
in our lives, the Savior has made it possible for us to become clean through
His redeeming power. But do we also understand that the Atonement is for
faithful men and women who are obedient, worthy, and conscientious and who are
striving to become better and serve more faithfully? I wonder if we fail to
fully acknowledge this strengthening aspect of the Atonement in our lives and
mistakenly believe we must carry our load all alone—through sheer grit,
willpower, and discipline and with our obviously limited capacities."
Elder David A. Bednar, “Bear Up Their Burdens With Ease”, April
2014 General Conference
"You should learn while you are young that while the
Atonement of Christ applies to humanity in general, the influence of it is
individual, very personal, and very useful. Even to you beginners, an
understanding of the Atonement is of immediate and very practical value in
everyday life."
Elder Boyd K. Packer, “Washed Clean”, April 1997 General Conference
"Christ came to save us. If we have taken a wrong course, the
Atonement of Jesus Christ can give us the assurance that sin is not a point of
no return. A safe return is possible if we will follow God’s plan for our
salvation. We have received this plan from the highest authority in the
universe, even God, our Heavenly Father. This plan was prepared from before the
foundation of the earth. It is a great plan of happiness, a plan of mercy, a
plan of redemption, a plan of salvation. This plan enables us to experience a
physical existence, including mortality, a time of probation, and to return to
the presence of God and live in eternal happiness and glory. It is explained in
the doctrines of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ."
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Point of Safe Return”, April
2007 General Conference
"Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God the Eternal
Father. He is our Creator. He is our Teacher. He is our Savior. His atonement
paid for the sin of Adam and won victory over death, assuring resurrection and
immortality for all men. He is all of these, but he is more. Jesus Christ is the
Savior, whose atoning sacrifice opens the door for us to be cleansed of our
personal sins so that we can be readmitted to the presence of God. He is our
Redeemer."
Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “What Think Ye of Christ?”, October
1988 General Conference
"It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that provides both a
cleansing and redeeming power that helps us to overcome sin and a sanctifying
and strengthening power that helps us to become better than we ever could by
relying only upon our own strength. The infinite Atonement is for both the
sinner and for the saint in each of us."
Elder David A. Bednar, “Clean Hands and a Pure Heart”,
October 2007 General Conference
"The Savior teaches that we will have tribulation in the
world, but we should 'be of good cheer' because He has 'overcome the world' (John 16:33). His Atonement reaches and is powerful enough not only to pay the
price for sin but also to heal every mortal affliction. The Book of Mormon
teaches that 'He shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and
temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which
saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people' (Alma
7:11; see also 2 Nephi 9:21)."
Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “He Heals the Heavy Laden”, October
2006 General Conference
"Only the life, teachings, and particularly the atonement of
Jesus Christ can release us from this otherwise impossible predicament. Each of
us has made mistakes, large or small, which if unresolved will keep us from the
presence of God. For this reason, the atonement of Jesus Christ is the single
most significant event that ever has or ever will occur. This selfless act of
infinite consequence, performed by a single glorified personage, has eternal
impact in the life of every son and daughter of our Father in Heaven—without
exception. It shatters the bonds of death. It justifies our finally being
judged by the Master. It can prevent an
eternity under the control of the devil. It opens the gates to exaltation and
eternal life for all who qualify for forgiveness through repentance and
obedience.
